Dental implants are a means of replacing the root portion of missing teeth. Composed of harmless titanium material, they are able to restore the functionality of the tooth, preventing the onset of bone loss and sagging skin. Dental implants are a durable and natural looking choice for people with missing teeth, with no risk of irritation to surrounding gum tissue.

What does treatment involve?

To begin with a small incision will be performed on the gum tissue and a hole made in the jawbone. The implant will then be securely fitted into this socket and the gum flap closed over it. The procedure will be carried out under local anaesthetic to prevent unnecessary discomfort for patients.

When treatment is complete the implant will be left to integrate with the bone tissue. This process usually takes between 3 and 6 months, during which a temporary restoration can be fitted. Once the implant area is healed a permanent restoration will be fitted. This may consist of a dental bridge, dentures or a dental crown.

Why would I need a dental implant?

People can lose teeth at any age, as a result of accidents, injury or decay. The replacement of missing teeth is important to the maintenance of dental health, as gaps in the teeth can contribute to a higher risk oral health disease, problems with speech and difficulty eating. If there are several teeth missing this can have a major impact on oral and general health.

Dental implants at Mollison Way Dental Surgery offer people an effective, long-term solution to missing teeth.
