Root Canal Treatment

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a procedure carried out to remove decayed pulp tissue from the root portion of the tooth. It is a means of saving teeth showing signs of decay or damage, as well as the prevention of further infection in the mouth.

What does the procedure involve?

Your dentist will use local anaesthetic to prevent feelings of pain. The pulp tissue of the tooth will be accessed through the crown of the tooth, from which any decayed tissue will be removed and the area cleaned thoroughly. Upon completion a filling agent will be placed in the root canal to prevent further infection and the tooth sealed. The root canal may need to be widened in some cases, which can require treatment to be carried out over several appointments.

Why would I need root canal treatment?

If your tooth has become damaged or decayed, or should your dentist identify any underlying issues during a dental check-up, a root canal treatment may need to be performed. This is a preferred alternative to having a tooth removed, able to prevent the onset of further oral health diseases and uphold the aesthetics of your smile.
